With many of us being relatively housebound over the coming weeks, there has never been a better time for a movie binge. When it comes to dog movies, we really are spoilt for choice. So grab your four-legged pal and snuggle down as you make your way through our favourite 10 dog movies for you both to enjoy.
An oldie and certainly a goodie. This iconic Disney film brings together two pooches from different backgrounds for a heartwarming doggy romance. Last year saw Lady and the Tramp join Disney’s growing line-up of live action remakes, though for us, the classic cartoon version will always be king. Spaghetti kisses all round!
Hachi: A Dog’s Tale (2009)
This emotional rollercoaster is based on the true story of Japanese Atika, Hachiko, who was born in Ōdate, Japan, in 1923. After the death of his owner, Hachiko returned to the Shibuya train station every day to wait for him before passing away nine years later. Starring Richard Gere, Hachi: A Dog’s Tale is a heart wrenching watch about the unending loyalty of man’s best friend.
The Secret Life of Pets (2016)
Max, a highly pampered Jack Russell living in a luxury Manhattan apartment, has his world turned upside down when his owner adopts a stray called Duke. This hugely popular animated dog film casts a light on what our pets get up to when we aren’t at home. With sequel The Secret Life of Pets 2 having been released in 2019, this animated comedy series is perfect for a lighthearted double sitting.
101 Dalmatians (1996)
This time it is the remake of the classic animated Disney tale that gets our vote. With a star studded cast, including Glenn Close as the wicked Cruella De Vil, 101 Dalmatians is one of our favourite dog movies that sees an evil fashion designer plotting to steal Dalmatian puppies to make a fur coat.
A Dog’s Purpose (2017)
Based on W. Bruce Cameron’s by the same name, A Dog’s Purpose is a touching story of one dog’s reincarnations throughout various time periods with different owners. This certified tearjerker is a journey of discovery for a dog’s true purpose, and is one that will have any owner cuddling their furry friend a lot tighter by the end.
Cujo (1983)
For those looking for a scare, look no further than Cujo. This classic horror based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name is quite the side-step from happy dog movies. It follows the story of Cujo, an initially friendly St Bernard, who wreaks havoc on a small town after contracting rabies. Prepare for jumps aplenty, and try not to be left feeling wary of your very own Cujo.
Eight Below (2006)
Eight Below follows the quest for survival of eight sled dogs. When brutal weather conditions force separates an explorer from his dogs, they are left fending for themselves. This is a dog movie of epic adventure that casts a light on loyalty and friendship, and will leave you feeling grateful about being inside!
Marley & Me (2008)
Starring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Anniston, Marley & Me centres around the life of Marley, a free-spirited labrador, and his family. This is one of the most unmissable dog movies, and is certain to warm the hearts of any pet lover. Enjoy watching Marley cause havoc, though just make sure the tissues are within reach and brace yourself for the ending.
Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993)
Convinced that they have been abandoned when their owners go on holiday, three pets embark on a monumental quest to find their family. Settle down for an adventure as you follow Chance, Shadow and Sassy as they set out on their epic journey across different landscapes, encountering a range of dangers and overcoming challenges along the way.
Beethoven (1992)
This cherished tale of a slobbery but lovable St Bernard is the first instalment of the Beethoven dog movies, with a range of sequels and spin-offs having since been released. The original sees the Newtons adopt Beethoven as a puppy, who quickly becomes an irreplaceable member of the family. This iconic dog movie is a nostalgic treat for many, so if you haven’t already, get watching!
