Once swallowed, acetaminophen is rapidly absorbed into the blood from the stomach and intestines. The main toxic effects are liver damage (particularly in dogs) and damage to red blood cells (particularly in cats) which prevents oxygen from being supplied to the body’s vital organs.
Symptoms of acetaminophen toxicity are:

- seizures
- abnormal heartbeat and decreased blood pressure

- coma (in very serious cases)
