The UK has some truly amazing dog friendly holidays.
More and more places are catering for our furry friends as 1 in 4 of us in the UK are Dog Owners.
Not to mention the variety in the type of holidays on offer – from quaint market towns, to bright city lights and dramatic coastlines.
It’s no surprise then that UK residents are choosing to stay put over the Summer, electing to ‘staycate’ rather than holiday abroad.
In doing so, more and more holidaymakers are searching for the most dog friendly holidays in the UK so their canine companion can tag along.
Our pals at Dog Furiendly compiled a list of £9.50 Sun holidays, and another of quirky breaks which are great if you have a pooch, or you can read on for our tips on the best spots for a UK-based paw-liday!
Famous for its very own dog – a Skye Terrier known as Greyfriars Bobby – Edinburgh is an absolute must visit, whatever the season. With a wide selection of dog-friendly hotels and pubs to choose from, Scotland’s capital city even allows dogs into a number of high-street shops, hair salons and art centres.
Plus, with Arthur’s Seat – an extinct volcano in Holyrood Park – and Calton Hill only a short walk away, the various areas of grassland that Edinburgh has to offer are the ideal places to give your pooch a good ol’ run around. Or, if you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city centre, Inverleith Park near the Royal Botanic Gardens is widely-known for its peaceful atmosphere, as is the Cammo Estate nearby.
You could take a trip to Loch Ness; read here how British Bulldog Mr Beefy spent his time in Scotland.
2. Brighton, East Sussex
While Edinburgh may be great for dogs, you will be hard-pushed to find somewhere more dog-friendly than Brighton and the surrounding areas in East Sussex. With a plethora of parks, Brighton also has fantastic selection of beaches as well as longer walks in the South Downs nearby – you’ll be spoilt for choice. In fact, you can pretty much take your pooch with you to wherever you go – most pubs, hotels and shops allow them.
The perfect place to relax, the thriving county has so many things to see and do. Whether you stay at a beachside apartment in Camber Sands, or a secluded holiday home in Hove, Sussex is a fantastic place to visit over the Summer. Just watch out for those pesky seagulls if you decide to get an ice cream near one of its many beaches.
3. Dartmoor, Devon
If you’re looking for a more adventurous holiday for you and your pup, Dartmoor in Devon is a fantastic option. This idyllic moorland is composed of vast open spaces, rugged valleys, ancient granite tors and flowing rivers, giving you a flavour of an untouched British landscape. As for all, it was the inspiration for one of Arthur Conan Doyle’s famed Sherlock Holmes mysteries.
Quiet, serene and beautiful – Dartmoor offers stunning views across an ancient landscape. Whether you camp, glamp or stay in a local hotel, the area is the perfect place to escape away from the world for a little while. It’s also incredibly dog-friendly, so you can bring your very own Hound of the Baskervilles with you as well.
4. Snowdonia, North Wales
Another active holiday option in the UK is North Wales. Famous for its stunning scenery and hiking trails. The region of Snowdonia, in particular, is concentrated around the impressive Mount Snowdon, and is home to over 100 lakes and rugged peaks.
The views on offer are simply incredible, stretching for miles across the sea over to Ireland on a clear Summer’s day.
The region is the perfect place to relax in peace and tranquillity with your dog in tow. Whilst there are some challenging hikes, a large number of the trails in Snowdonia are perfectly safe for your dog to join in.
If you’re still not convinced, our mates at Dog Furiendly have loads of ideas on how to make the most out of a trip to Snowdonia with your dog.
Or, not too far away you could try some other holidays in Wales:
5. Durdle Door, Dorset
Not to be confused with Hogwarts’ famed Headmaster, Durdle Door in Dorset is one of the most dog-friendly beaches without any restrictions. Recently voted the most beautiful beach in the UK by Countryfile, a trip here will not disappoint!
Famed for its iconic stone archway, Durdle Door is the jewel in the crown of the coast in Dorset known as the Jurassic coast, featuring wonderfully clear waters and to die for views. It also offers a wide variety of places to stay in surrounding areas– from hotels, B&Bs, and campsites to glampsites.
Holidaying here will really be an experience like no other for both you and your dog, living long in the memory for years to come.
There’s lots on offer if you’re considering a dog friendly holiday in the UK this year.
From the blue seas of the South Coast to the dramatic scenery in North Wales and a sophisticated City break in Scotland’s capital city – take your pick!
