June is national microchipping month in the UK. If you have ever lost your pet and had it returned through a microchip, you will know how important these tiny little implants are.

It’s quick and relatively pain-free for your dog, and means that if your pooch wanders off and they’re found by the RSPCA, you’ll be reunited asap.

30,000+ trusted dog sitters are ready to care for your dog like family!

What is a microchip and how does it work?

The chip is slightly bigger than a grain of rice, planted under the scruff of your dog’s neck. It contains your contact information, and while the microchip is not a GPS device and will not track your dog independently, if your pooch is found the RSPCA can scan their neck and your details will come up.

How much does a microchip cost and where can I get one?

The procedure costs a maximum of £50 and can be carried out in your nearest veterinary surgery.

Are microchips mandatory in the UK?

Yerp. Dog owners who have not had their pets microchipped could face a fine of up to £500. Other than for owner security, it’s important that dogs are chipped for a couple of key reasons:

The first is that many dogs are abandoned rather than lost. A dog that’s been microchipped can be traced back to the owner, who can in turn be prosecuted for animal cruelty.

They also protect dogs acquired for illegal dog fighting, or those which are trained for dangerous purposes. If these dogs are found in a police sting, the owner could be traced and punished for their actions.
