There’s no doubt about it: when you get a dog, things will change, big time!
Here are some things to keep in mind if you’re thinking of getting a four legged friend.
Will you have the time to care for it?
Anyone who has one will say that while they love their pup with all their heart, it can be really hard work (especially if you’re a single pet parent!).
Not only do dogs need to be exercised regularly, as pack animals they also need plenty of love and attention.
Before you get a dog, take some time to think about your day-to-day schedule. Do you work full time? Do you have dinner plans with friends every other night? Lots of holidays booked?
These things don’t need to be a problem, especially when you can book dog walking and sitting via Gudog, but you need to make sure you have plenty of time to bond with your pooch.
Will you have the patience?
Any of our friends with dog will admit that they have lost patience at some point. Puppies will chew on your favourite pair of Nike Airs, wake you up whining in the middle of the night, pee wherever they want (and that’s everywhere) and do a bunch of other things which you’ll need to be willing to forgive.
Do I have space?
It’s super important for a dog to have their own space. Space to eat, play and sleep (unless you want to share a bed with them for the next 10 years). Make sure you have room so you can create the right environment for your pup.
Should I get a puppy or adopt an adult dog?
We don’t know about you, but we could scroll pictures of box fresh puppies on Insta all day. They’re gorgeous, but adopting an adult dog can be just as wonderful.
With an older dog, you get to give a home to a pre-loved pooch who really needs one, and you don’t need to go through the terror of puppy training!
But I want a pedigree dog, can I still adopt?
100s of purebred dogs are given up for adoption every year in the UK because their families are unable to look after them. To find one, all you need to do is google the type of breed you are looking for along with the word ‘rescue’ and the nearest pooch in need of a home will pop up. Either that, or visit The Kennel Club’s ‘find a rescue’ site.
If you’re dead set on getting a brand new puppy, make sure you buy one from a trusted breeder. Again, our friends over at The Kennel Club are the best people to ensure you get a healthy puppy from responsible breeders through their Find a Puppy portal. All the pups listed are part of the Assured Breeders Scheme, members of which have to give proof of the vaccinations and medical history of puppy parents.
Happy searching!
